ASSISTANT SCIENTIST I  
Seed Science Laboratory

The Seed Science Center in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is currently seeking applications for an Assistant Scientist I. This position will perform duties under general supervision and conducts testing for the presence of biotech traits (intentional or unintentional). The incumbent will use the primary methods of herbicide bioassay, immunoassay (ELISA plates & lateral flow strips), electrophoresis and DNA testing. Additionally, the incumbent will supervise analysts and students in conducting testing; interacts with customers in answering general questions and questions specific to their samples; develop or improve testing methods for checking for traits; and calculates amount needed and applies seed treatments to customer samples. 

The successful candidate will be proficient in using various types of laboratory equipment including: micropipetters, nanodrop, real time PCR thermocycler, multiphor, genogrinder, and centrifuge. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word are needed to be successful in this position. 

Minimal travel (perhaps every other year within the U.S.)  
Bachelor's degree in Agronomy, Biological or Plant Sciences, or related field and one year of related experience.  
Demonstrate testing proficiencies using: herbicide bioassay (substrate imbibition and spray), immunoassay (ELISA and lateral flow strips), isoeletric focusing (IEF), and PCR (DNA) testing. 

Experience with SNP's and screening for transgenic traits in conventional or organic corn seed. 

Prior experience demonstrating customer service and supervisory skills within a lab setting. 

Certification by the Society of Commercial Seed Technologists (SCST) in one or more areas of the Registered Genetic Technologist Certification by SCST.  
Minimum $37,113; commensurate with qualifications
