CFIA Lentil Referee 12/21/11
The Commercial Seed Analysts Association of Canada (CSAAC) and Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) are pleased to announce a call for participation in a Lentil Germination Method Referee.  The Referee is designed to obtain information on lentil germination testing methods for the purpose of uniformity among laboratories and harmonization with AOSA rules.  This is NOT intended to be an evaluation of the proficiency of a participating laboratory.

The method referee is planned to be sent out the week of January 23-27 and results are to be submitted to the CFIA laboratory by March 16th, 2012.  The methods of testing will be conducted on two lots of 400 seeds using the following:

1. Rolled towel with a prechill
2. Rolled towel without a prechill

Additional instructions for analysis will be sent in January.  Each referee sample will contain approximately 1000 seeds.  In order to prepare the referee samples, we need to know the number of participating laboratories so that the approximate number of samples can be prepared.   Therefore, if your laboratory intends to participate, please express your interest by January 4th, 2012 to:

Invitation to participate in a national referee study on orchardgrass purity testing 11/1/11
The OSU Seed Lab is pleased to announce that a referee on orchardgrass purity testing will be conducted in November-December. We invite AOSA and SCST Labs to participate in a study that will include 6  samples  to be tested using the  current AOSA Rule which requires factoring and 6 sister samples that will be tested using the AOSA rule but without factoring. The results will be used to compare the accuracy, consistency and efficiency of these two methods across labs.  The goal is to get a total of 10 to 20 participant labs for this national referee.

The labs that would qualify for this referee are those that do test orchardgrass. The AOSA Rule requires to use Uniform Blowing Procedure on orchardgrass. Therefore, their Blower should have been  calibrated following the current AOSA Uniform Blowing Procedures (with Master Calibration Samples from the USDA and subsequent monitoring by Equivalent Air Velocity).   Labs that need to  calibrate their blower ahead of time in preparation for this referee should contact Susan.Maxon@ams.usda.gov  to borrow the MCS. Likewise, labs that need to purchase the pocket anemometer should purchase Turbo Wind Speed Meter Model 271 from Davies Instruments at www.ambientweather.com/datume.html or call 877-413-8800

We also encourage any interested lab to submit orchardgrass sample(s) for this national study, indicating: sender, production region, year, variety and purity and germination result. Six samples representing a broad range of purity levels will be selected from all submitted samples to include in the study. A minimum sample size of 200g (desirable 300-400g)  is needed so that we can have enough seeds for all participants.   We need these samples by November 10th.

Those interested in sending samples and/or participating in this referee, please contact Sabry.Elias@oregonstate.edu. Participant Labs will receive blind working samples and the protocol for the study, along with data sheets in December 2011. The goal is to receive the results  by the end of December, 2011. Thanks to everyone.

It is the importer’s responsibility to provide the required information for seed importation and to ensure that seed imported into Canada is in compliance with the applicable legislation.

Importers of seed should access and be familiar with the document “The ABCs of Seed Importation into Canada” on the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s (CFIA) website at: http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/plaveg/seesem/abce.shtml. This document describes the import requirements under the Seeds Act and Regulations.

Please note that the document has recently been updated and reformatted to ensure that it is user-friendly and further aligned with the Seeds Act and Seeds Regulations. Importers of seed into Canada are encouraged to read the document in its entirety.

The CFIA has published this document in order to provide technical information solely with respect to the various requirements of the Seeds Act and Seeds Regulations. It should be used as a reference document only, along with the Automated Import Reference System (AIRS) at: http://airs-sari.inspection.gc.ca/Airs_External/Decisions.aspx?lang=1. NEW SEED ANALYST TRAINING CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
SEED TECHNOLOGIST  EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM (STEP) at
COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY

Colorado State University (CSU) is offering a new Certificate Program in Seed Technology to train seed analysts to work in State or Commercial Seed Laboratories. The Certificate is an invaluable tool for anyone who wants a career in seed technology or for current seed analysts working to become a Registered Seed Technologist or a Certified Seed Analyst (RST or CSA). The Certificate Program is designed to help fill a well documented need for new seed analysts within the industry.

Although CSU has been offering courses in seed technology since 1998, it has recently expanded the training to a Certificate Program which includes 10 online courses and laboratory training. The program offers 10 distance education courses through CSU and 3 other institutions: the University of Kentucky, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and Iowa State University. The laboratory training may be taken at CSU or at a wide range of state and private seed testing labs throughout the U.S.A. The courses are:

  1. Seed Anatomy and Identification

  2. Seed Development and Metabolism

  3. Seed Germination and Viability

  4. Seed Purity Analysis

  5. Seed Separation and Conditioning

  6. Seed Storage and Deterioration

  7. Large Seeded Legume Seed Production

  8. Vegetable Seed Production

  9. Seed Dormancy

  10. Vigor Testing

The Certificate Program is a two year program that costs about $3000. Scholarships are available for those needing financial assistance. Anyone interested in this new educational and employment opportunity should visit http://step.colostate.edu.  For further information please contact Dr. Jack Fenwick at j.fenwick@colostate.edu, phone # (970)-491-6907 at Colorado State University, Ft. 2/17/2010 Seed Images
SEED IMAGES is a unique website of seed photos established by the SEED TECHNOLOGISTS EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM (STEP) at Colorado State University in 2002 to help the seed analyst and anyone in the seed industry identify unknown or questionable seeds. It has undergone many changes and improvements during its 8 year history. Many new photos with seed descriptions have been added as well as a finely tuned search engine.

SEED IMAGES now contains over 1700 full color images of native, crop and weed seeds along with written descriptions of the species.

Some of the features of the website are:

1. Magnifications of 100X for ease of identification.
2. The site has a user friendly search mechanism for many different seed characteristics including size, shape, color and texture.
3. Identification is by scientific and common names.
4. Species included are agricultural grain, forage, vegetable, tree, shrub, herb, flower and state and federal noxious weeds.

One of the most useful options in the SEED IMAGES database is the Seed Comparison Tool that allows one to identify seeds that look similar by showing two different seeds side-by-side on the same screen.

SEED IMAGES is in the process of adding a large number of tree, vegetable and range species to the photo collection. A video demonstration of how the database works can be seen by going to SeedImages.com and clicking on the "Seed Database Demo" link. SEED IMAGES is a virtual seed herbarium and a valuable resource for seed technologists, conditioners, company managers, educators and related research institutions. Users can subscribe or renew their subscriptions online.

Laboratories that are working with the two Photo Books issued by STEP can update their books by downloading new species from SEED IMAGES and print out the photos they desire. There are 5 different subscription options available: The most cost effective is the 24 month subscription for $200. The 12 month rate is $100. There are 3 trial subscription options: 3 days for $10, 3 months for $35, and 6 months for $65.

To renew a subscription or initially subscribe visit the SEED IMAGES website at www.seedimages.com and click on Subscribe Now.
