Workshops and Symposia
Native Seed Quality
Symposium June
5th
The morning session will include a panel discussion of native seed
producers, conditioners, marketers, consumers, and seed technologist.
The afternoon session will focus on native seed viability research and
testing methods. Profits from this workshop will be donated to the
Seed Testing Research Foundation.
Tetrazolium Testing Workshop
June 6th
The goal of this workshop is to cover a wide variety of
native species illustrating alternative preparation strategies and cutting
techniques. This should result in an increased understanding of different
embryo forms, metabolically active tissues and multiple embryos within a
single seed.
Genetic Workshop "New Technologies"
June 6th
The genetics of seed is being utilized to meet customer demands in
the form of convenience, health benefits, and ability of seeds to produce
in different environments. Workshop speakers will discuss new
technologies that are developed to produce and handle more than 500,000
data points per day with ultra high throughput genotyping or sequencing.
Other technologies are being developed for varietal identification with
“chip” technology and seed technology with magnetic capture techniques to
improve these testing areas will be discussed. Technology providers will
demonstrate their technology and allow participants to discuss the
possibilities and limitations of the technology in small groups. Please
come join us in learning and supporting the Seed Testing Research
Foundation.
Statistics Workshop June 6th- Experimental Design and Data Analysis
for Seed Testing Research (half day)
The workshop will cover:
-Principles of experimental design
-Data Analysis
-Examples of using statistical package(s) in analyzing data
Seed Pathology Workshop (half day)
Topics at this workshop will include the effect of pathogens on seed
vigor, primary and secondary infection, and airborne disease safety.
U.S.-Canadian Grader Training and Testing
Workshop June 4th, Exam June 5th
Workshop Brochure
USDA and CFIA will be co-hosting a training session
for anyone interested in becoming accredited to assign grades to seed for
export to Canada. The session will be held on Monday, June 4, 2007, from
8 am to 4:30 pm at Cody, Wyoming prior to the annual AOSA/SCST meeting.
On Tuesday, June 5, 2007, individuals will have the opportunity to be
tested for grader accreditation. Testing will begin at 8 am and continue
no later than 4:30 pm.While anyone may participate, upon registration and
payment of fees, in either the training or the testing sessions, only
individuals who are RSTs or CSAs and who work for Accredited Seed Labs (ASL)
or ISTA accredited labs may be accredited as graders. This training will
be limited to the first twenty participants who register. To register and
pay associated registration costs please contact Perry Bohn (perry.bohn@usda.gov)
or Gene Wilson (gene.wilson@usda.gov).
